I got my first ever ever job interview! It's on Tuesday at Old navy for a sales associate position. I'm super psyched about it.

Any Advice?

Sweetie, you'll do great, I'm sure! Just be calm and present, and (unfortunately) look as white-bread as you can. Once you get the job, you'll figure out where the latitude is for, er, "personal expression" regarding clothes, jewelry, etc. Smile a lot, and be as pleasant as you can be. That would be my advice for my little sister, were she to ask. You'll be just fine. Hey, I have a job interview Tuesday, too! Let's both knock their socks off!!! Let 'em figure out how they've gone so long *without* us! ;o) Hugs ~ Misha

      Woo, Tuesday is an exciting day! And, lol, just tonight we went to a Chinese place for dinner and I got a fortune cookie that said "In the coming month you will be offered an important promotion." Is from no job to a low level one considered a promotion? ^^;

    Congratulations!

My advice is to be you in the most professional way possible. Like don't try to leave your personality at home, and yet make sure that you let them know that you understand that you take working seriously. Wear something that is comfortable to you both physically and makes you feel like you if you can and also that shows you took time and care to get ready.

You can also try to think about what questions they might ask you and think about the answers, you won't anticipate everything but whatever you think about might be pretty close and let you feel like you've got some thoughtful answers.

One I'd think about if I didn't have any past paid work experience is what kind of experience stuff I could talk about to show them how I Might work. Babysitting, volunteer work, cleaning your aunts house, helping out with the school bake sale anything you can think of. Also non work stuff to show how you might deal with people since it's a customer service job.

maybe I should ask what kind of advice feels like it might be helpful? I wouldn't stress about it too much. If you show them you take it seriously that should be good. They are used to hiring people with little or no work experience so it isn't really proving to them that you are better qualified than the next person, but more showing them that you will be available to work, honest and easy to deal with.

The biggest thing I'm worried about is that I'm just so nervous, and telling myself "don't be nervous" isn't really cutting it ^^;; I'm a bit shy but when it comes down to it I can usually do what needs to be done with people, and part of the reason I wanted a customer service job is to work on getting more comfortable with people. Thanks for the advice :)

oh see that would be an excellent thing to tell them if you are worried that you are seeming shy. Tell them you are nervous and that you think this job would be wonderful because it would help you get more comfortable with people.

Is there anything you can think of that might relax you?

If Leslie were here she would do a wonderful job of reminding you that nervous feels like like excited so if we can start to think of it differently then we won't worry about it so much. (only she'd say it alot better) But that might be worth a try, stop thinking you are nervous and switch it to you are excited.

My nervous doesn't feel like excited ^^; nervous makes my stomach hurt and sometimes my chest. Excited it just happy. Though I will try to find a way to relax. I wish my Master was home around the time I'd have to leave. Hugs from him always relax me :)

Be attentive, friendly and positive, and sit up straight in your chair.

Those things may seem obvious, but it took me a couple of tries to figure them out.
You don't have to fake enthusiasm, but let them know that you feel positive about the job.

You'd be surprised how many people express ambivalence at job interviews, which may be honest, but an employer is considering whether to make the investment in hiring and training someone, so they want to be sure they have someone who at least definitely wants the job.

(Maybe pretend that the interviewers are customers, if that helps - they are shopping for an employee, after all, right?)

think about it from their point of view and think through what they may be looking for. and think back to past experiences, whether job related or not, where you effectively met that requirement. give examples. good luck!

If you have to act like someone besides who you are to get a job, you aren't going to like being in that job. Relax and come as you are. Dress in a business-like way (probably better than you would do for the job itself) to show respect for the employer, and to show you understand that you will be a direct face of the company to the customers. Don't talk too much; listen carefully to the questions and respond honestly, while at the same time emphasizing your strong points and minimizing your weak points. A couple things that are really important to lots of employers and really lacking in most applicants are a willingness to work hard and be on time. If those two things are among your virtues, make a point of it.
    Good luck to you!

totally. When I was hiring employees for the Movie Theater I worked at my biggest questions were about their willingness to work and their willingness to work on weekends and holidays. You'd be surprised how many people apply for a job somewhere that is mainly open weekends, nights and holidays(except during the summer and xmas vacation) and somehow expect to not have to work anything but monday - friday days.
