When I think of Mother's Day, I think of soooo many things mothers can be honored for, especially the sacrifices so many of them have made, in many situations before they really even knew what they were getting into. Just the first 2 years of motherhood call for incredible dedication, 24/7. A salute to all you mothers, moms and "Mommy"s out there.
This got me thinking. if we celebrated Women's Day, I mean as a society, not just an obscure day hardly anyone calendars, what would you personally be honoring or celebrating?

I think a hit on any of the above links will be "news" to a lot of people, though I am sure it makes media news for a few seconds every year.
I once had a job working in a Legislative agency that was managed by women from the Director down to line management. I was the only male in management, though I didn't start out there. It gave me a really unique perspective of how different women are in business when they can actually carry the full responsibilties and not just be an exception, but the norm. This was also a "service" agency and not for-profit. The difference in the general office ambiance was quite obvious, to me. For me, much of the playfulness, openess and love I have had in my life is because of women. Of course, the sexiness and beauty I've savored. As a woman or a man, what would "Women's Day" mean to you, personally?

Re: Mothers' Day... and what about "Women's Day"?
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 10:23 PMWoman's Day to me would be a day to acknowledge and celebrate the divine feminine energy in women and men.
It would be a spiritual celebration a day to honor the sacred, honor the wisdom and honor the power of the feminine that we all hold. And make a conscious effort to listen to the inner voice

Re: Mothers' Day... and what about "Women's Day"?
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 11:45 PMWell, there IS an "International Men's Day" that is much the counterpart of IWD, both of them seem to have been born in Russia, by the way.
Pretty skant wikipedia entry - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inte..._Men's_Day
By the way, the "Women's Day" I speak of would not be like Valentine's Day, to honor that "special woman in your life" nor like the "International Women's Day" primarily recognizing what women have achieved, but to honor what all women ARE... in essence. -

Sun, May 4, 2008 - 7:38 AMI can just see the "You're My Goddess" sparkly cards already....noooooooooooooo? Please, no more calls for vacuous "special" days that are essentially meaningless excuses to sell crap and ignore the fact we don't appreciate people most of the rest of the time.

Re: Mothers' Day... and what about "Women's Day"?
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 6:32 PMMothers' Day...does rather leave out those women who for various reasons are not mothers. Mothers' Day has always been difficult for me, since my grandparents raised me after my parents divorced. I hate those cards that talk about "you were always there, to bandage my knees" etc. Well, Mom, you were never there. Same goes for Fathers' Day.
If I had my wish, it would be for a Caregiver's Day: To recognize those who care for others, often without pay or thanks, often watching the person in their care slowly die. Been there, still hurting (yesterday evening was the final wake).
Sorry about the rant. Bad day, still crying. -

Re: Mothers' Day... and what about "Women's Day"?
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 5:22 AM"Mentor Day." I could really go for "Mentor Day." And then I'd have a horribly punny excuse for centaur cards.

Re: Mothers' Day... and what about "Women's Day"?
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 11:25 AMI really like the idea of a woman's day. I think it would be cool to spend some time thinking about amazing woman I mean maybe there's not really a men's day but it doesn't seem like asking to much to have one day when we spend some time remembering amazing woman in history and today. I mean we have a Martin Luther King day...but no Harriet Tubman day. Just as a random example I have no desire to argue over it. I just recently helped my son do a bit of research on Harriet and it blew me away. What a tough smart determined lady.
It could also be to remember women who might be our own personal idols or mentors. Women who paved the way to where we are now and woman who inspire us.
and some celebration of Girlfriends, or maybe we could have a woman's day...and then a Girlfriends day. I like that idea. But then I'm all about making special days for things.
I am really looking forward to Mother's day this year. and Father's day too actually since I'm being both parents I started celebrating both days(o: -

Mon, May 5, 2008 - 12:40 PM>"we have a Martin Luther King day...but no Harriet Tubman day"
Our entire holiday calendar honoring individuals is totally sexist. Geez! I'm now back to the contemplation: What is really at the bottom of sexism and male dominance in a society that could not even exist without women? As a black MAN, I can see where women of ALL color, including white, are in a very similar boat.... if not worse! (A John Lennon song title comes to mind) -

Re: Mothers' Day... and what about "Women's Day"?
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 3:47 PMour entire holiday calendar is totally sexist! I guess that is one of the things that takes away to catch up. I don't think our society is as sexist as that...but holidays aren't created or changed very often so that is going to take a long time. Which is why I like the idea of a woman's day. It's not equal but it would be a cool start and not to big of a deal.
I think that can be true, I think black woman might have it the toughest. Of course that's probably why some of them are the toughest woman I can think of. Actually that's who I'd like to have a holiday for Maya Angelou. She just blows me away with her wisdom and her energy.
